Birth control has long been considered “safe and effective,” but more and more women are coming forward on social media to reveal the opposite… They’re sharing stories (like mine) about the liver tumors they had to have removed or (like our guest, Emmalee’s) the blood clots it caused. There are more public conversations happening about birth control and hormonal health… finally!
While I think this transparency is helpful for others to make truly informed decisions about their health, another sad fact remains… A lot of women still admit they don’t really know much about their bodies or how their hormones work.
First off, it’s not your fault. Most of us get a 2 hour lecture in 3rd grade where we hear about how we’ll get our period at some point, which means we’ll get cramps & bleed. Then the teachers supply us with tampons and pads to play with for an hour while the boys learn about their bodies. For some reason, we never get more information than that… and a lot of us don’t think to question it until something goes wrong!
Today’s guest, who goes by The Hormone Honey on Instagram, is here to:
- share her story about birth control & hormonal health
- demystify the menstrual cycle
- shed light on the dangers of hormonal birth control
- explain why birth control is often referred to as a “band-aid” for other issues
- discuss alternative options you have to actually heal
- provide science-backed contraceptive methods that won’t harm you
We’re not here to shame anyone who uses birth control. We simply want to share our stories to encourage you to be your own best advocate and make the best decision for you. No matter why you started, it’s never too late to reevaluate.
